Tennis Senior Open Week Results:
The 2011 competition came to resounding and successful finish on Saturday. With gale winds playing a big part in the proceedings, each player adopted to this in their own unique way. This was some week for the 210 contestants who did themselves and their club proud throughout the week. Spectators of all ages ventured to the Hillview to see the champagne tennis. Caitriona & Juliette Tobin, 15 week old twin daughters of Noelle and Liam Tobin were easily the youngest while Septuagenarian and ever green John Cooney kept a keen eye on the games. At that same time Conor Niland was making his mark in qualifying for Wimbledon, our singles players were out in force at the club. Conor’s sister Gina Niland had in the past lifted the Hillview ladies premier “Green Ribbon” Cup in 1985. Coming to the fore in the Premier Men’s singles (1/2) was Tommy Rochford (Kilkenny) who defeated last years his title holder, the in form Craig O Neill (Tramore). Tommy also won the mixed doubles in fine fashion with Julie Anne O Neill against the solid experienced pairing of Dick McCarthy and Niamh Kennedy, seasoned Munster champions. Tommy however failed to make the hat- trick and win the men’s doubles with William Guiry when they came against the tough opposition of Willie Reynolds and Joe Smith of Tramore & St Anne’s (an all coach final extravaganza!). Well done however Tommy for a spectacular tournament. The home club interest very much focussed on the extraordinary performance of our singles players. The grade 6, 5, 4 & 3 in men singles titles fell to Hillview while the ladies G6 also came the clubs way. Well done to Anne Marie Quigley, Justine Foley, Ulrik Nyberg, Eugene O’Mahony and Simon Simecek. All those cold nights on the “ladder”, with EF on your heels, was worth it! Anne Marie Moroney and Ulrik Nyberg lifted two great titles. Together in the mixed G5 and Anne Marie in the ladies doubles with Yvonne Carolyn and Ulrik lifting the coveted grade 5 singles against Eoin Burke from Castleview in the largest competition of the tournament. There were more many more fine performances, Martin Diggins &Barry Toomey of Castleview did the biz inMD3 while Catherine Fitzell and Helen O’Dwyer Ryan of Larkspur piped Sinead & Laura from Castleview in the WD3 while Paddy Kendrick & Jimmy Power left their mark on MD5 while Michael Moroney took his first open title with Nula O’Connell beating Sean Looby & Marie Walsh of New Inn in Mx6.
Declan Tarrant and Phil Darrer tennis captains would like to thank all the contestants from neighbouring clubs for their support during the week and a special thanks to Ryan Motor Power and Pinewood Healthcare, who were the tournaments sponsors for the week. Food as always plays a big part in this open week and many thanks to Jiri who played a blinder all week on the Barbie.
