JUVENILE PITCH AND PUTT

6th September 2007

County Matchplays
Martha O’Brien showed her Match play expertise yet again in a replay of the Munster Matchplay Final.  Against newly crowned All Ireland Champion Michelle McCarthy, Martha needed to be at her very best, and in true Martha style she stormed into an early lead.  Pitching and putting from the top drawer and despite a wonderful birdie blitz from Michelle, Martha remained cool and calm and claimed her County title at the 36th Hole.

Stephen Shoer on his home course cruised to the final with an excellent display of Pitch and Putt.  Evan Hickey Stephens strongest challenger this year worked his way through some tough rounds and set up a final that brought out the very best from these two talented players.  Evan must have realized it was not going to be his day when despite his best Pitch and Putt he could not break the Nenagh Maestro.  Stephen with a red-hot putter proved to hard to handle and claimed his title at the 32nd hole.

Thanks to all the talented boys and girls that competed in this competition and your sporting manner showed yet again that it is not all about winning but is about the enjoyment of it.  Thanks to everyone who helped with the running of this competition.

Tom Short Classic
Hillview was the venue for this County Competition.  Hillview’s teeth were showing this day with rock hard greens and strong winds which combined to make it a real test for the 20 players who turned out to play.  Anthony Looby was the first to tame this mighty course and played with guts and determination to post an excellent score of 5 under par.  A nervous finish due to his young age cost Anthony the title but only after a play off with Stephen Shoer.  Stephen just won’t be beaten and again showed why he will be a force at senior level in the future.  Stephen came out on top in the playoff but was quick to point out the excellent play of Anthony.

Martha O’Brien took the ladies title again having to overcome the stormy Hillview conditions.  Laura O’Hanrahan claimed 2nd place having worked hard on her pitching with Ailish Kenrick despite her extended bunker visit at the third finishing a creditable 3rd overall.  Martha showed that she has the skill and knowledge to tame any course and left a long lasting impression on all in Hillview with an excellent speech at the end of play.
